This specimen was lot 23330 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "CEYLON. 50 Cents, 1917. Calcutta Mint. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. A well struck and fully lustrous coin with cloudy dark gray toning. A few light scuffs are noted on the bust." This type was struck 1913-14 and 1917 and is somewhat scarce. It was the same weight as the Indian half rupee but lower in fineness. It was last struck in silver in 1929. Ceylon, famous for tea, attained its independence in 1948 after the British left India and is now known as Sri Lanka.
