Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 23326

This specimen was lot 23326 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "CEYLON. 1/2 Cent, 1904. London Mint. PCGS MS-64 Red Brown Gold Shield. Pop: 4; none graded finer by PCGS. An attractive coin with subtle cartwheel luster and abundant mint red remaining on both sides." This type was issued 1904-09. It is common in all grades and was accompanied by a quarter cent and one cent. Half cents were struck for Ceylon as late as 1940. Ceylon, famous for tea, attained its independence in 1948 after the British left India and is now known as Sri Lanka.

Recorded mintage: 2,012,000, plus proofs.
