Cayman Islands 1977 100 dollars Fr-3
This specimen was lot 70519 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $750. The catalog description[1] noted, "CAYMAN ISLANDS. 100 Dollars, 1977. NGC PROOF-68 Ultra Cameo. Celebrating the five previous queens-regnant in England--Elizabeth I, Mary I, Mary II, Anne, and Victoria--the charming proof issue features a great deal of frosting to the devices with just a slight degree of mirrored brilliance evident upon the reverse." This NCLT sold well enough to be minted in 1975, 1976 and 1977. It was accompanied by a silver fifty dollars (KM 12). Another 100 dollars issued in 1977 (KM 15) honored the queen's silver jubilee. The islands are now famous as a tax haven and banking center much patronized by drug lords, ousted dictators and others seeking to avoid publicity.
