This specimen was lot 34074 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "CAYMAN ISLANDS. 50 Dollars, 1977. London or Llantrisant Mint. Elizabeth II. NGC PROOF-67 Ultra Cameo. On Queen Mary I, from the 'English Monarchs and Symbols' series. An infrequently encountered type." This series of NCLT's honoring past queens of England included KM 12, KM 21 (shown here), 22, 23, 24 and 25. The islands are now famous as a tax haven and banking center much patronized by drug lords, ousted dictators and others seeking to avoid publicity.
