SB122-8407r.jpg

This specimen was lot 8407 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "VENEZUELA. Caracas. 1/8 Real, 1818. Ferdinand VII. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, AU Details. Variety with Roman 'I' in reverse fraction and four leaves in left and right branches of wreath. Exhibiting a good strike with attractive brown patina that mixes with patches of minor earthen deposits and areas of verdigris that account for the 'details' designation. Despite the environmental exposure, showing good detail for this RARE four-year type, and sure to attract the specialist as a result. From the Centuria Collection." This type was originally struck for local use in 1802-05. It was struck again 1814-18 by the royalists as the turmoil of the wars of independence cut off trade. The 1818 is the most common date but nice survivors are few.

Recorded mintage: 94,000.

Specification: 2 g, copper, 18-20 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14806, KM-C1; Cal-type 28 #60; Stohr-7.
