This specimen is a silver two reales issued by the republicans in Caracas, Venezuela, after independence. Krause[1] notes that this type was struck in 1830. The design is inspired by the Bolivian cobs which circulated freely in the region. The fineness is not known but is likely to be lower than the standard .896 silver used at the major mints (Lima, Potosi, etc.). The specimen shown was lot 10656 in the Apr 2, 2011 March 2011 Baltimore Auction where it sold for $826. The catalog description noted,

"VENEZUELA. Caracus. 2 Reales, 1818-BS (1830). Light cabinet friction, nicely toned. EXTREMELY FINE-ALMOST UNCIRCULATED."

This type was struck about 1830, long after the wars of independence were over.

Recorded mintage: 268,000.

Specification: 4.3-5.3 g, about 0.700 fine silver.
