Caracas 1818-BS real
This specimen is a silver one real issued by the royalists in Caracas, Venezuela, during the wars of independence. "F7" stands for Ferdinand VII, king of Spain, and the design is inspired by the Bolivian cobs which circulated freely in the region. The fineness is not known but is thought to be about 0.700.
The specimen shown was lot 21952 on Aug 13, 2010 at the 2010 August Boston, MA Signature ANA World Coin Auction #3010 by Heritage Auctions, where it fetched $1150. The catalog description noted,
"Ferdinand VII Royalist Real 1818BS Caracas, toned VF, skillfully plugged hole at the top, rare type struck during the struggle for independence in Venezuela. Virtually all surviving examples of this type have been holed."
