Unlike Angola and Mozambique, Cape Verde obtained its independence in 1975 with little bloodshed. Since independence, Cape Verde has been ruled by the same political party which controls Guinea-Bissau on the mainland; they are de facto united. This type was struck in 1977, 1980 and 1982 and bears the portrait of Domingos Ramos (1935-66) who was murdered while agitating for independence in Guinea-Bissau. Subsequent issues of this denomination (KM 30, 33, 42) have been in nickel-plated steel.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
Specification: 12.2 g, copper-nickel, 31 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 20.
