Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74296
SB224-74296r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74296 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. 50 Cents, 1955. Ottawa Mint. Elizabeth II. PCGS PROOFLIKE-67. A lovely Prooflike striking, icy white in color and deeply watery in the fields. Topped by only two examples in the PCGS census." This type, struck at Ottawa 1953-58, is common in all grades but is scarce in unblemished condition. The use of chrome plated dies gave a polished appearance to the coins which in turn magnified the detractive effects of bagmarks.

Recorded mintage: 753,511.

Specification: 11.66 g, 0.800 fine silver, .300 troy oz ASW, 29.72 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM-53.
