Canada 1890-H 50 cents
This specimen was lot 30195 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $3,818.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Victoria 50 Cents 1890-H VF25 PCGS, Heaton mint. Notably one of the most difficult coins to acquire in the series, the elusive 1890-H has a mintage of only 20,000 coins and is rarely encountered in the marketplace. Seen here in a very respectable VF25, this example has attractive light-gray patination with heavier reverse toning and a few minor distractions within its fields. A rare coin in any grade and one that is sure to bring a strong bid." This type is notoriously difficult to find in nice condition despite being minted in respectable numbers 1870-1901.
Recorded mintage: 20,000 (the key date).
Specification: 11.62 g, 0.925 fine silver, .3456 troy oz ASW, reeded edge.
