Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale, lot 73266

This specimen was lot 73266 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "BULGARIA. 100 Leva, 1992. Sofia Mint. PCGS PROOF-68 Deep Cameo. Endangered Animal Series, Imperial Eagle. This exceptionally fierce commemorative offers hard mirrored fields and frosted devices without fog, haze, or spot." This NCLT was struck after the fall of communism but before the currency was reformed (1000 old leva = 1 new lev).

Wikipedia comments, "The eastern imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca) is a large bird of prey that breeds in southeastern Europe and extensively through West and Central Asia. Most populations are migratory and winter in northeastern Africa, the Middle East and South and East Asia."
