Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 40709

Bulgaria fought a protracted war against the Ottomans, culminating in liberation from the latter's rule in 1878. The new Bulgarian state was quite weak, however, and new conflicts drew it into the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, along with Serbia and Greece, once again against the Ottomans in Turkey. This one-year type was struck for Bulgaria, probably at Vienna, and is common. This specimen was lot 40709 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $92. The catalog description[1] noted, "BULGARIA. 10 Stotinki, 1913. Kremnica Mint. Ferdinand I. PCGS MS-64."

Recorded mintage: 20,000,000.

Specification: 4 g, copper-nickel, 19 mm diameter, plain edge.
