Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1774-LCR 24 mariengroschen KM-870
This specimen was lot 74504 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1774-LCR. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-55. Uncommonly smooth in outward appearance, this attractive issue yields almost complete original detail and few distractions. The viewer's eyes are drawn to light, even, silver-olive patina that mingles nicely with richer gunmetal color near the legends. A stalwart example for the Wild Man specialist or excellent as part of a broader German or European set. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Ex: Kunker auction with ticket." This type was struck 1735-80 for Karl I and is common. Twenty-four mariengroschen made a gulden, which was originally two-thirds of a thaler but had slipped to half a thaler by the end of the reign. Another gulden of this reign featured the leaping stallion reverse (KM 895), altho it was not struck every year. Mintmaster LCR appears 1773-78.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
