Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1756-ACB 8 gute groschen
This specimen was lot 5551 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €300 (about US$418 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Karl I. 1735-1780. 8 Gute Groschen 1756, Braunschweig. R Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Lagerliste R. Gaettens 61, Nr. 174. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Charles I, 1735-80, eight good groschen of 1756, Brunswick mint. Die cracks, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This denomination was introduced in 1756, soon after the founding of the convention thaler of 1753 (28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver). It was was struck in various styles until 1805, with this type noted for 1756-59. Eight gute groschen = one quarter thaler. Sixteen gute groschen were also minted, starting in 1780.
