Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1688-RB thaler Dav-6393A
This specimen was lot 55488 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1688-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August & Anton Ulrich. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Rudolf August was the older brother and inherited the title on the death of August II in 1666. Interested in art and hunting, he delegated affairs of state to his brother Anton Ulrich, a situation he formalized in 1685 by making him co-ruler. Three different thalers were struck in 1688: KM 577/Dav-6395 struck 1688-1700; KM 576/Dav-6394 struck 1688 only and rare; and this one, struck 1688-92.
