SB1123-73471r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73471 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1652-HS. Zellerfeld or Goslar Mint. August "the Younger". PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. A largely argent example with subtly mottled areas of cerulean and gray toning. Well-struck, though the reverse has some softness courtesy of the Wild Man on the obverse. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Ex: Lewis Collection, MWNA Sale (8-9 July 1977), lots #822 (with ticket)." This specimen seems to be a product of the Zellerfeld mint which was operated by mintmaster Henning Schluter. This type was struck 1650-53 and is somewhat available. Numerous "wild man" thalers exist from this state.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-6340; KM-393.3; Welter-818.
