Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73470

This specimen was lot 73470 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1651-HS. Zellerfeld or Goslar Mint. August "the Younger". PCGS Genuine--Graffiti, EF Details. This example exhibits medium gray surfaces with light champagne and dark cobalt toning. The noted old graffiti is manifested as light scratches which have toned to somewhat blend into their surroundings. Light wear and attractive. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1650-53 and is somewhat available. Numerous "wild man" thalers exist from this state.
