Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1652-HS thaler Dav-6527
This specimen was lot 73564 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg & Luneburg (Celle). Taler, 1652-HS. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg Wilhelm. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, AU Details. A cheerily argent specimen with gold and russet toning in the protected areas that serves to accentuate the design elements. The Wild Man is well executed and prominent. Attractive. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from Kuenker." This type was struck 1649-53 and is fairly common. Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714.
