Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74600
SB923-74600r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74600 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneberg: Calenberg & Luneburg (Celle). Taler, 1652-LW. Clausthal Mint. Christian Ludwig. PCGS EF-45. Mingled silver, slate, and azure gray toning completely engages both sides of this appealing Taler. Underlying luster is present on both sides and some silver brilliance struggles for attention around the legends. No marks assail the unaided eye though a scattering of tiny ticks can be found under low magnification, all of which are commensurate for the grade. A choice specimen that should prove popular with German States enthusiasts." Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714. This type is recorded for 1649-65, the entire reign of duke Christian Ludwig.
