Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 30216

This specimen was lot 30216 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $780. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenburg & Luneburg (Celle). Taler, 1653-HS. Zellerfeld Mint. Christian Ludwig. PCGS AU-55. Sporting a delightful gunmetal gray tone and some hints of iridescence nearer the peripheries, this elegant and wholesome crown offer great details, especially to the muscular midsection of the tree-grappling wildman. Incorrectly listed on the holder as Dav-6518 on account of the images being swapped in the reference. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714. KM 47.4 (Dav-6517B) was struck 1643, 1648, 1652-57, 1663-65.
