Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1630-HS thaler Dav-6307
This specimen was lot 254 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 275 CHF (about US$345 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND | Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, Herzogtum, Friedrich Ulrich, 1613-1634. Taler 1630 HS, Zellerfeld/Goslar. Sehr schön. Kleine Kratzer. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Frederick Ulrich, 1613-34, thaler of 1630, Zellerfeld or Goslar mint. Very fine, Small scratches.)"
This type was struck 1627-35 and is among the more common thalers of the period. This specimen seems to be a product of the Goslar mint; HS are the initials of mintmaster Henning Schluter. The "wild man" design was popular in Brunswick and Hannover at the time and appeared on many different thalers and minors. The mintmaster's initials (HS) are not mentioned in the SCWC.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28.91 g.
