Stack's Bowers 2026 ANA sale, lot 42304
SB826-42304r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42304 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $1,586. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. Taler, "96" (1596). Andreasberg Mint. Heinrich Julius. PCGS EF-40. Overall darker patina and decent a strike for the type with minimal signs of handling. A popular type on account of the design and SCARCITY of the type. From the Heisner Collection from Down Under." The plethora of thalers issued by the duke in the 1590's can be confusing to sort out. The issues of 1596 we list as follows:

  • KM MB269/Dav-9089: "Lying", 1596;
  • KM MB270/Dav-9090: "Lying", 1596-97;
  • KM MB271/Dav-9073: bust obverse, 1596-97;
  • KM MB272/Dav-9074: bust obverse, 1596-97;
  • KM MB274/Dav-9080: "Truth", 1596-98, shown here;
  • KM MB275/Dav-9081: "Truth", 1596 only;
  • KM MB276/Dav-9083: "Truth", 1596 obverse muled with 1596-98 reverse.

This "truth" thaler, with St. Andrew on the obverse, was struck 1596-98. The "Lying" and "Truth" thalers were directed at the duke's opponents in the Brunswick nobility who were giving him trouble.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-9080; KM-MB274.
