This specimen was lot 20382 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. Gold Gulden, 1558. PCGS Genuine--Repaired, EF Details Secure Holder. Quite a pleasant example despite the notated defects on the holder. Well struck with attractive honey-gold tone throughout." This one year type was issued along with two ducats (Fr-626, -627). The group comprises the first gold coins of the duchy. The goldgulden was lighter and lower in fineness than the ducat.
