Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle 1636-HS thaler Dav-5737A
This specimen was lot 41339 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Luneburg (Celle). Taler, 1636-HS. Zellerfeld Mint. August I. PCGS EF-45. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This thaler was issued by the duke in his capacity as bishop of Ratzeburg ("EPIS ·RATC:"), which is where Davenport listed it. August spent most of his career as Lutheran bishop of Ratzeburg and only became duke in 1633, three years before his death. Other thalers for 1636 include Dav-5732, -5736, Dav-5736A, Dav-5737, Dav-5738, Dav-6484, and -6485. Ratzeburg was annexed to Mecklenburg in 1648, at the conclusion of the Thirty Years' War.
