Sincona sale 22, lot 1262
Ratzeburg in 1648, on its annexation

This specimen was lot 1262 in Sincona sale 22 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 350 CHF (about US$440 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Celle, Herzogtum, August der Ältere, 1611-1636. 1611-1633 als Bischof von Ratzeburg Taler 1635. Clausthal. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, Augustus the Older as bishop of Ratzeburg, 1611-36, thaler of 1635, Clausthal mint, good very fine.)"

While Ratzeburg issued several "wildman" thalers that aren't too expensive, this bust type issued 1634-36 is slightly scarce. Ratzeburg was annexed to Mecklenburg in 1648, at the conclusion of the Thirty Years' War.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.28 g.

Catalog reference: KM 115 (listed under Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle), Welter 882; Dav-5732.
