Bremen 1748 1/2 thaler KM-192
The first specimen was lot 20195 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Bremen. 1/2 Taler, 1748. Franz I. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. A stunning coin with prooflike surfaces that are deeply toned and possess vibrant hues of iridescent and lilac and cobalt coloration on both sides." The second specimen was lot 85 in Schulman auction 389 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €260 (about US$366 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "German States - 1/2 Thaler 1748, Silver, BREMEN In the name of Francis. Crowned double-headed eagle. Rev. crowned arms with supporters. Ex Cherry Tree Collection. PCGS Genuine AU Details. Cleaned." The city of Bremen issued three different half thalers in 1748: KM 192 (shown here), KM 191 and KM 193. All are scarce and KM 193 is rare. They represent the last issue of this denomination from this state, which issued coinage only intermittently in the eighteenth century. The same dies were also used to strike a thaler (KM 194/Dav-2052) which is very rare.
