Brazil 1904 20 reis
This specimen was lot 71145 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $75. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 20 Reis, 1904. PCGS MS-65 Red Gold Shield. The finest graded in the PCGS census, this Gem does exhibit some minor weakness on the obverse, but nevertheless clean surfaces that are rich in color and luster." Shown is a copper twenty réis of the United States of Brazil, struck 1889-1912. It is accompanied by a similar forty réis (KM 491). Despite the low mintage, it is catalogued as a common date. The twenty réis, a descendant of the twenty réis of colonial times, was replaced in 1918 by a copper-nickel twenty réis.
Recorded mintage: 850,000.
Specification: 7.49 g, bronze, 25 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-490.
