Brazil 1904 10000 reis
This specimen was lot 23147 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 10000 Reis 1904, MS62 NGC. Flashy in the fields and admirably struck with some planchet granularity (as made) around the edges. A much better date that remains absent from many advanced collections of Brazilian coins." This type, struck 1889-1922 during the early republic, is, with the 20000 réis, the last gold coin struck for circulation in Brazil. This date is listed as fairly common in the SCWC despite the trifling mintage. Most were retained in bank vaults as backing for paper currency and therefore circulated very little but commonly come heavily bagmarked.
