Shown is a copper forty réis of the United States of Brazil, struck 1889-1912. It is accompanied by a similar twenty réis (KM 490). Despite the low mintage, it is catalogued as a common date. The forty réis, a descendant of the forty réis of colonial times, ceased production after 1912 and was replaced in 1918 by a copper-nickel fifty réis.
Recorded mintage: 525,000.
Specification: bronze, 30 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 491.
