This specimen was lot 20411 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,207.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 10000 Reis 1901, AU Details with numerous small surface marks and some edge cuts on the reverse. The reported mintage for this date is 111." This type, struck 1889-1922 during the early republic, is, with the 20000 réis, the last gold coin struck for circulation in Brazil. This date is rare. Most were retained in bank vaults as backing for paper currency and therefore circulated very little but commonly come heavily bagmarked.
