In 1868 the silver coinage of Brazil was redesigned to adopt the portrait of the emperor Pedro II, who already appeared on the gold coinage. For the first time since 1835, copper coins were issued in the denominations of ten and twenty réis. These denominations were terminated in 1870 and the forty réis commenced in 1873 and was struck until 1880. The year 1870 saw the end of the Paraguayan War, wherein Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay together virtually annihilated that country and ended its pretensions to empire.
