The first specimen was lot 22311 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 40 Reis, 1875. Pedro II. NGC MS-64 Brown. Good strike with traces of mint red." In 1868 the silver coinage of Brazil was redesigned to adopt the portrait of the emperor Pedro II, who already appeared on the gold coinage. For the first time since 1835, copper coins were issued in the denominations of ten and twenty réis. These denominations were terminated in 1870 and the forty réis commenced in 1873.
