This specimen was lot 1103 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $1,998. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 800 Reis, 1846. RARE. Mintage of only 672 pieces. Toned. NGC AU-53." This silver 800 réis was minted 1835-46 in Rio de Janeiro. The series came accompanied by 100 réis, 200 réis, 400 réis and 1200 réis in silver. The 800 réis had the same specification as the old 640 réis last minted in 1833 and is much the rarest denomination.
