Brazil 1844 800 reis
This specimen was lot 34047 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAZIL. 800 Reis, 1844. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Pedro II. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, AU Details. This handsome low mintage issue exhibits crisp bold devices displaying lovely rich slate patina with a slight iridescent sheen. Close inspection reveals a thin scratch on the obverse from long ago, now toned over matching the rest of the coin, accounts for the details designation. Despite its shortcomings a presentable example of the type that is pleasing to the eye with plenty of underlying luster. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Purchased privately from Freeman Craig (10/1978)."
This silver 800 réis was minted 1835-46 in Rio de Janeiro. The series came accompanied by 100 réis, 200 réis, 400 réis and 1200 réis in silver. The 800 réis had the same specification as the old 640 réis last minted in 1833 and is much the rarest denomination.
Recorded mintage: 628.
Specification: 17.92 g, 0.917 fine silver.
