This silver 800 réis was minted 1835-46 in Rio de Janeiro. The series came accompanied by 100 réis, 200 réis, 400 réis and 1200 réis in silver. The 800 réis had the same specification as the old 640 réis last minted in 1833 and is much the rarest denomination. The specimen was lot 20569 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $4,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II 800 Reis 1840, XF Details, cleaned, with noticeable marks and possible evidence of mount mark on edge. Extremely rare, with a tiny mintage of only 145 pieces."
