Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 23260
SB121-23260r.jpg

This specimen was lot 23260 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 20 Reis, 1826-R. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Pedro I. PCGS MS-63 Brown. Choice and radiant, this piece exhibits a great mix of red and brown despite its designation as brown only. A hint of brilliance shimmers from the protected areas." Copper coinage had long been a feature of colonial Brazil, unlike the Spanish American colonies, where copper did not circulate except as tokens. Large quantities were issued during the United Kingdom period (1818-22) and the early years of the empire (1822-31). However, the ten réis was not struck in the prodigious numbers of the twenty, forty and eighty réis in copper. Rio struck this type 1822-31 and Bahia 1825-30.

Recorded mintage: 4,419,000.

Specification: 7.17 g, copper.

Catalog reference: KM-360.1.
