Brazil 1818R 160 reis rev DSLR.jpg

This specimen is a two year type struck at the Rio mint. Similar silver 160 réis were struck at Rio during 1810-15 (KM 306) and at Bahia during 1821 (KM 323.2). All are scarce, especially compared to the contemporary copper eighty réis, which was issued in large quantities starting in 1818. The copper eighty réis continued into the reign of Emperor Pedro I (1823-32) but the silver 160 réis is restricted to some very rare issues of 1824, 1826 and 1833 (KM 373 and KM 389).

Earlier silver 160 réis are known, starting in 1695. All are scarce to rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, .131 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 323.1.
