This specimen was lot 23264 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $21,150. The catalog description[1] noted, "João VI 320 Reis 1818-M, AU53 NGC, a choice example of this extremely rare one-year type with silvery gray patina and bold features despite being struck over an earlier coin. Certainly one of the finest known." This type was struck 1818-22 at Rio (KM 324.2, common), 1820 at Bahia (KM 324.3, scarce) and 1818 at Minas Gerais (KM 325.1, very rare).
