Brazil 1833-R 160 reis
The first specimen was lot 7537 in Ponterio sale 152 (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $1,782.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 160 Reis, 1833-R. One-year type. Mintage of 400 pieces. VERY RARE. Toned. EXTREMELY FINE." The second specimen was lot 20546 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $2,300. The catlaog description noted, "Pedro II 160 Reis 1833R, Choice XF, even slate-gray patina with no significant flaws. An extremely rare one-year type with a small mintage of only 492 pieces." This issue, the last prior to the reform of 1834, was accompanied by silver 80 réis, 320 réis, 640 réis and 960 réis, all very rare, signs of the government's bankruptcy during the regency of emperor Pedro II. The superseding types of 1834-48, including this 400 réis, while not common, are much more available.
