Brazil 1833-R 80 reis
The first specimen was lot 4143 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 2,500 CHF (about US$3,076 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL Pedro II. 1831-1889. 80 Reis 1833, Rio. Toned. Uncirculated." The second specimen was lot 23313 in Heritage sale 3012 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $3,737.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "Pedro II 80 Reis 1833R, AU58 NGC, deeply toned with sharp features and a glossy sheen to the surfaces, exceptional grade for this rare little type. From The Guariba Collection of Brazilian Coins." While the copper eighty réis was struck in enormous quantities, the silver equivalent was issued only occasionally and is very rare after independence, with only 1824, 1826 and 1833 recorded. In 1834, the coinage was reformed and the denomination became the new 100 réis.
