This specimen was lot 23233 in Heritage sale 3012 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Maria I & Pedro III gold 6400 Reis 1781B, AU55 NGC, boldly detailed with abundant mint luster." The type was struck 1777-86 while Maria and Pedro III were consorts. After his death in 1786, Maria is shown alone, wearing a widow's veil. The Rio issues are fairly common but the Bahia issues (shown here) are much scarcer.
