Künker sale 386, lot 4980

This specimen was lot 4980 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,809 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG, MARKGRAFSCHAFT, SEIT DEM 14. JAHRHUNDERT KURFÜRSTENTUM, Friedrich Wilhelm, der Große Kurfürst, 1640-1688. 2/3 Taler 1676, CS, Berlin. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (electorate of Brandenburg, Frederick William, the Great Elector, 1604-88, two-thirds thaler of 1676, Berlin mint. Scarce in this quality, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

In the late seventeenth century, the price of silver forced the thaler to rise from 72 kreuzer to 90 kreuzer, making them uneconomic to produce for many German states. Brandenburg, among others, responded by issuing a large variety of gulden (sixty kreuzer) at several mints. The SCWC notes KM 420 (1676-HS), KM 445.1, 445.3, 445.4 (1676-GD Z, Minden mint), KM 443 (1676-CS, shown here), KM 445.2 (1676-A VH) and KM 447 (1676-IA) for 1676.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 18.20 g.

Catalog reference: KM 443, Dav-246; v. Schr. 276.
