Brandenburg-Bayreuth 1642 ducat Fr-370
The first specimen was lot 4006 in Goldberg sale 41 (Beverly Hills, May 2007), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brandenburg-Bayreuth. Ducat, 1642. Christian, Margravate of Brandenburg, 1603-1655. Bust right. Leg: CHRISTIAN:D:G:MAR:BRAND:DV. Reverse:Quartered oval shield. Leg: +PRVSS:ST:POM:CAS: VAN:IAG:BVRG:I:NVRNBERG.P:R: NGC graded MS-61. A wonderful looking early ducat of the small state of Beyreuth. Beyreuth was given to Christian, who was the second son of Johann Georg of Brandenburg Prussia. Few gold coins of this state were minted, and all are very scarce." The second specimen was lot 4322 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011) where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,330 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Brandenburg-Bayreuth, Markgrafschaft Christian, 1603-1655. Dukat 1642. Geharnischtes Brustbild mit Halskrause nach rechts. Rv. Wappen auf verzierter Wappenkartusche oben umher die Jahreszahl. Felder min. bearb. Vorzüglich. (Germany, Margraviate of Brandeburg-Bayreuth, Christian, 1603-55, ducat of 1642. Obverse: armored bust with ruffed collar to right; left: quartered arms divide date. Extremely fine)."
