Sincona sale 38, lot 1145

This specimen was lot 1145 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 8,000 CHF (about US$9,595 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Brandenburg-Bayreuth, Markgrafschaft, Christian, 1603-1655 Dukat 1653. Nürnberg Auf sein 50. Regierungsjubiläum. Von grösster Seltenheit. Gutes vorzüglich. (margraviate of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, Christian, 1603-55, ducat of 1653, Nuremburg mint, on the fiftieth anniversary of his reign. Of the highest rarity, Good extremely fine.)"

Brandenburg-Bayreuth was a minor state in Franconia between Nurnberg and Bamberg. It was ruled by a branch of the Hohenzollerns who considered themselves to be the senior line of the house. It was handed over to Bavaria by Napoleon.
