Brandenburg-Ansbach 1769 thaler Dav-1999
This specimen was lot 20623 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $4,406.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brandenburg-Ansbach. Alexander Taler 1769, on the union of Brandenburg and Bayreuth, Facing busts of Georg Friedrich and Alexander/Open book on Altar, MS64 NGC. Attractive reddish-gray toning over prooflike fields with no major flaws. Rare in this near-Gem condition. From The Richard P. Ariagno Collection." This type was issued 1769 only and is listed as rather scarce. It is accompanied by a ducat (Fr-363). It comes not from the Electorate of Brandenburg (later the Kingdom of Prussia) but from Brandenburg-Ansbach, a Hohenzollern enclave west of Bavaria and neighboring Nuremburg.
