This specimen was lot 575 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it sold for €150 (about US$193 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT - Patagon 1656 sur 1655, Silver, PHILIPPE IV 1621-1665 Bruxelles. Croix de batons noueux accostee de la date, tete en haut. R/. ecu couronne entoure du collier de la Toison d'Or. Rare surfrappe. Beau+. Fraai +. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver patagon of 1656, Brussels mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross divides the date, angel face mintmark above; reverse: crowned arms, order chain around. Rare overstrike, fine or better.)"

Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. This type was struck at the Antwerp mint 1622-65 (hand mintmark, shown here) and at the Maastricht mint 1625-31. A very similar coin was struck for Artois, Flanders, Luxembourg and Tournai. The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
