Brabant 1654(h) patagon Dav-4462
This specimen was lot 933 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €160 (about US$205 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR patagon, 1654, Anvers. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Petit éclat du flan. Patine foncée. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver patagon of 1654, Antwerp mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown, bearing the jewels of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Small planchet nick, nica patina, very Fine.)"
Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Maastricht, Antwerp and Brussels mints 1621-39, 1645-57 and 1660. A very similar coin was struck for Artois, Flanders, Luxembourg and Tournai. The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.1 g, 0.875 fine silver; this specimen is 27,95 g.
