Schulman 379-582r.jpg

This specimen was lot 582 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it sold for €460 (about US$591 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HEERLIJKHEDEN & STEDEN / LES SEIGNEURIES & VILLES - 1/2 Patagon 1654, Silver, PHILIPPE IV 1621-1665, TOURNAI-DOORNIK Tournai. Croix de batons noueux accostee de la date, mm. tour en haute. R/. ecu couronne. RR. Tres beau+. Zeer fraai +. (lordship of Tournai, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver half patagon of 1654, Tournai mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross divides the date, tower mintmark above; reverse: crowned arms, order chain around. Very rare, very fine or better.)"

Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The half patagon was struck at Tournai 1626, 1630-36, 1645-48 and 1652-65. A very similar coin was struck for Artois, Flanders and Brabant. The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.05 g, 0.875 fine silver; this specimen 13.33 g.
