Jean Elsen sale 144, lot 1269

This specimen was lot 1269 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €70 (about US$92 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips IV (1621-1665), AR patagon, 1651, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond stokkenkruis met een vuurijzer tussen het jaartal en het juweel van het Gulden Vlies. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Barstjes. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver patagon of 1651, Bruges mint. Obverse: crowned Burgundian cross with the jewels of the Golden Fleece around; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Planchet cracks, Very Fine.)"

Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Bruges mint 1622-65. A very similar coin was struck for Artois, Brabant, Luxembourg and Tournai. The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date for the type.

Specification: 28.10 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 27,88 g.
