Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 803
Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 803 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €280 (about US$379 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR patagon, 1630, Bruxelles. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Petit éclat du flan. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver patagon of 1630, Brussels mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown, bearing the jewels of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Small edge flaw, Very Fine.)"

Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Brussels mint 1621-60 (angel face mintmark, shown here), the Antwerp mint 1622-65 (hand mintmark) and at the Maastricht mint 1625-31 (star mintmark). A very similar coin was struck for Artois, Burgundy, Flanders, Luxembourg and Tournai. The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The Maastricht issues are priced about double those of Brussels or Antwerp. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.10 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 27,76 g.
